SCAG 2024 Scholarship Program

CTF Supports SCAG”s annual scholarship program by funding two $4,000 scholarship awards.

SCAG’s annual Scholarship Program supports students working toward long-term career goals in planning or public service. The program provides a $4,000 scholarship award for seven high school or community college students from the SCAG region. Two additional scholarship awards not tied to a specific county may also be awarded at the Regional Council’s discretion. Recipients may also have an opportunity to meet with their local government representatives and practicing planners to discuss the importance of urban planning and a future career in public service.

2024 Scholarship Program

Program Requirements

  • Residency: Must be a resident within the SCAG region (i.e., Imperial, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, or Ventura counties, or on Tribal Lands within the SCAG region) and be eligible to work in the United States. Students may be asked to submit proof of eligibility to work in the United States if selected as a semi-finalist. 

  • School Enrollment: Must be a graduating high school senior or currently enrolled in a two-year community college in the SCAG region. Graduating high school seniors must enroll in higher education (two- or four-year college or university) immediately following graduation from high school (i.e., no gap year).

  • GPA Minimum: Candidates must have a 3.0 grade point average or higher (based on a 4.0, unweighted scale).

Application Materials

  • Minimum 500-word essay describing your interest in urban planning, public policy and/or public service and future career goals.

  • Two letters of recommendation from (unrelated) individuals who can attest to your leadership ability and interest in public service.

  • Transcript(s) from the school where you are currently enrolled. Community college students must provide both high school and community college transcripts.

  • Completed online application.

Things to Consider When Applying

  • Application packages that demonstrate an interest in urban planning, public policy and/or public service and/or intended majors such as urban planning, environmental planning, engineering and/or political science will be prioritized over application packages that do not.

  • Internship opportunity and visit to SCAG: An internship or visit to SCAG offices in Los Angeles to attend a Regional Council meeting are not required. Interested candidates can contact SCAG’s Scholarship Program Coordinator for more information.

Children of Fallen Transportation Worker Memorial Scholarship

2024 Caltrans Fallen Workers Memorial Scholarship

Honoring the memories of those who were killed while serving
Caltrans and the people of the State of California.

Purpose:

The Caltrans Fallen Workers Memorial Scholarships are awarded to children of Fallen Caltrans Workers – as well as to those of Fallen Workers in California’s transportation industry, including contractors – to help selected students meet their post-high school educational goals.

Amount:

Scholarships will be awarded in the amounts of $1,000 - $5,000. The number and size of the scholarships awarded each year will be determined by the cash balance in the fund and the number of scholarship applications received.

Eligibility:

An applicant must be the child or stepchild of a Caltrans worker or a worker in California’s transportation industry – including contractors – who was killed on the job. Further, the applicant must be currently enrolled in college, in a vocational school, or is a senior in high school who after graduation is planning to continue his/her education.

The scholarship award may only be used to attend a post-secondary school or institution. This may include any public or private four-year accredited college or university; a two-year accredited college an accredited vocational-technical college; or an accredited training institution.

  • Applications will be accepted through Wednesday, March 20, 2024

  • Selection(s) will be made and announced by Wednesday, April 3, 2024

  • Scholarships will be awarded at the Caltrans Fallen Workers Memorial Ceremony on Thursday, April 25, 2024, at the State Capitol

Application Requirements:

All scholarship applicants must submit each of the following:

  1. A completed and signed Caltrans Fallen Workers Memorial Scholarship application form, which can be accessed at https://www.the-ctf.org/scholarships or https://dot.ca/gov/programs/human-resources/talent-aquisition-recruitment/scholarships.

  2. A typed essay of no more than 2 pages, double spaced, using font 12, explaining what receiving the scholarship would mean to the applicant and how the scholarship would make a difference in the applicant’s education and life.

  3.  A copy of the applicant’s transcripts and/or grade report from the school currently or most recently attended.

  4. Proof of enrollment for the post-secondary school or institution that the applicant is/will be attending.

  5. Name of parent/stepparent who was killed on the job.  Please include the year of passing, job title, and, if available, the government agency or company he/she worked for.

Selection Criteria and Presentation:

 All applications will be reviewed by a panel of judges on the following criteria:

  • Justification presented in the essay for financial assistance 30%

  • Academic performance 25%

  • Leadership and participation in school activities 15%

  • Volunteer activities in the community 20%

  • Overall Application presentation 10%

The Debra "Sam" Haack Memorial Scholarship is available for 2022 Graduating High School Senior students from Alpine, Amador, Calaveras, Mariposa, Merced, San Joaquin, Stanislaus or Tuolumne County. Senior High School Students who plan to pursue an education in the trades that relate to Caltrans Maintenance and Operations (for example; Diesel Equipment Technician, Electrical Technology, Heavy Equipment Operator, Welding Technology, Landscaping. etc.). Qualifying post high school graduation institutions include the community colleges and trade schools within the aforementioned counties.

Amount: $2000

Tim Fleming Memorial Scholarship

Tim Fleming Memorial Scholarship

The Tim Fleming Memorial Scholarship honors Tim Fleming, an outstanding engineer and community leader who had a positive impact on communities in Northern California before passing away at the age of 51. A graduate of UPO and Stanford, Tim exemplified leadership, integrity, and character. He was an active member of the ACEC Sierra Chapter and APWA Sacramento Chapter. This scholarship supports students at three institutions who are carrying on Tim’s legacy of scholarship and community service.

Eligible Applicants: Undergraduate students in their Junior or Senior year or graduate students majoring in civil engineering or a transportation-related field at the following universities: University of California, Davis; Cal State University Sacramento; or the University of the Pacific.

Amount of Award: $5000

Caltrans HQ DAC Scholarship

Caltrans HQ DAC Scholarship

Deadline: November 12, 2021 at 5 PM

Criteria/ Eligibility: A college student who has a disability defined by the Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA) as having a mental or physical impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities; residing in California at the time of applying for the scholarship, and currently enrolled in a minimum of six units in a college or university. Students must aspire to work in the transportation industry and study subjects that are relevant to the missions of transportation agencies. Qualifying majors include but are not limited to: civil, environmental, and mechanical engineering, planning, environmental studies, accounting, bookkeeping, clerical administration, communication, English, social media, real estate, surveying, business administration, mechanical repair, etc.

Amount: Two $500 and two $250 scholarships will be awarded.

Pat Weston Memorial scholarship

Criteria/ Eligibility: The California Transportation Foundation (CTF) and the California Department of Transportation, Planning programs are offering one $850 scholarship to full-time Caltrans employee. The employee must be employed with Caltrans for a minimum of six months, and must be pursuing a degree in Transportation Planning or a related field.

This scholarship is intended to recognize, encourage, and assist an outstanding Caltrans employee who are pursuing a Baccalaureate or Graduate degree in planning or a related field. To apply the student must meet the following criteria:

  • Working towards a baccalaureate or a graduate degree in Transportation Planning, Urban Planning, or City or Regional Planning. Related fields of studies such as: Urban or Regional Studies, Public Policy, Public Administration, Environmental Policy or Studies, Geography, Sociology, Political Science, Landscape Architect, or Economics will also be considered

  • Must have worked for Caltrans for a minimum of six months

  • Student must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better

  • Recipients cannot receive more than one award from this scholarship

  • Pursuing a career at Caltrans in Transportation Planning after graduation

Caltrans Transportation Planning Scholarship

Criteria/ Eligibility: The California Transportation Foundation (CTF) and the California Department of Transportation, Planning Staff are offering one (1) $850 scholarship to promising Planning Student Assistant. This scholarship is intended to recognize, encourage, and assist an outstanding student who are pursuing a baccalaureate or a graduate degree in planning or a related field. Applicants must have a demonstrated interest in working in the planning profession. Students must meet the following criteria to be eligible to apply:

  • Be employed with The Department as a volunteer or as a paid student assistant at the time of application

  • Be working towards a baccalaureate or a graduate degree in Transportation Planning, Urban Planning, or City or Regional Planning. Related fields of studies such as: Urban or Regional Studies, Public Policy, Public Administration, Environmental Policy or Studies, Geography, Sociology, Political Science, Landscape Architect, or Economics will also be considered

  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better

  • Plan to pursue a career in transportation planning, urban planning, or city or regional planning after graduation

H. Heckeroth Scholarship

The California Transportation Foundation (CTF), a nonprofit organization, announces four $1,000 scholarships: the H. Heckeroth Scholarship for the 2020/2021 academic year. Applicants must be a college/university undergraduate majoring in civil engineering, interested in pursuing a career in transportation after graduation, and affiliated with Caltrans. Current student assistants, volunteers, and sons or daughters of Caltrans employees are eligible to apply. The award of the scholarship is based on the applicant’s commitment to a career in transportation, current job skills, and academic record.Financial need may be considered, but it is not a primary factor.

Applicants must meet the following general criteria:

  • Must be a United States citizen, permanent resident, or documented international student.

  • Must be a college/university undergraduate majoring in civil engineering.

  • Must plan to pursue a career in transportation after graduation.

  • Must provide an official transcript and proof of current enrollment.

  • Must provide a sealed letter of recommendation from a school faculty member.

  • Must provide a sealed letter of recommendation from a work supervisor.

  • Cannot have received a CTF scholarship within the last two years.

Amount: Four awards available, $1000 each.

Applicants must be in their senior year of a California high school and interested in pursuing a college degree in civil engineering. The award of the scholarship is based on the applicant’s commitment to a career in transportation, current job skills, academic record, and specific goals and experience. Financial need may be considered, but it is not a primary factor.

Applicants must meet the following general criteria:

  • Must be a United States citizen, permanent resident, or documented international student.

  • Must be in his/her senior year of a California high school.

  • Must intend to enroll in civil engineering curriculum at a California college or university.

  • Must plan to pursue a career in transportation after graduation.

  • Must exhibit community and school involvement.

  • Must provide an official transcript.

  • Must provide a sealed letter of recommendation.

  • Work experience and/or volunteer experience may be considered
